A Brief History

Discount Transport Service was originally named "Eric's Transport Service".  Eric had driven for a San Diego County mobile home transporter since 1986, leaving in early 1992, in order to start his own transport company with his wife Sally.  As time went by, it became clear that the company was able to operate successfully and safely, and still keep the cost of operations very low.  So, to reflect this fact, the company changed it's name on April 6, 1995 to "Discount Transport Service".  The new company designed its equipment with modern manufactured housing in mind, as well as the older mobile units.

Discount Transport Service obtained a County of San Diego Business Certificate, entered the Bit Inspection program, and received DMV transport number CA114404.  Annual permits from CALTRANS, the County of San Diego, El Cajon, Vista, Poway, Chula Vista, the City of San Diego, Santee, and several other townships were established.  Discount Transport Service has won several certificates from the County of San Diego for exemplary compliance with regulatory ordinances.

It takes steady nerves and a good understanding of practical geometry to maneuver a large manufactured home in traffic, tight mobile home parks, or on narrow country roads. Eric has successfully performed these challenging tasks for over 19 years.

A pilot is often needed to drive an escort car with wide-load signs and flashing lights, to warn oncoming traffic of the approaching oversized load and to direct traffic when necessary.   The pilot also notifies the transporter of dangers around blind curves, using a CB radio, and serves as a spotter by using a hand-held CB to guide the driver through narrow passages.  This extra "set of eyes" can make the difference between a professional move, and one in which property damage occurs. Sally Kurzdorfer and daughter Omara Kurzdorfer have taken on these responsibilities.

Another important element in the transport of manufactured housing is equipment. Discount Transport Service uses the most flexible 10-way hydraulic hitch on the market, the Omni 2000. This facilitates moves that might otherwise be almost impossible, or require a crew with special jacking equipment at greater cost to the consumer. DTS uses a special slider plate for situations in which the truck cannot get to the trailer hitch.  The rig used at DTS is a White/GMC 2-axle conventional tractor, which has been cut down to a very short wheel base.  This allows greatest flexibility while having enough power to pull heavy modern 6-axle units.  For transporting 5th wheel units, a special attachment has been manufactured.  Our truck can get into spots that even pick-up trucks cannot!

Sally and Eric take care of the office end of the company, answering phones, obtaining permits, scheduling operations, doing site checks, writing invoices, bids and contracts, and handling all of the other functions needed to run a small business.
